Head - Product/Technical Development (Packaging - Metal/Roofing) :

- To provide technical expertise and process development support to Operations plants relating to new and existing products and materials.

- To own, maintain and develop product / materials specifications and systems.

- To supervise the introduction of new products into manufacturing and optimise.

- To provide timely and professional technical support to customers as required.

- To work closely with Operations and Quality teams to ensure customer requirements are met at all times.

Main Responsibilities and Duties :

- To be the bridge between NPD and Operations and support the introduction of new products on both sites as appropriate. To liaise with the customer as appropriate.

- To provide technical expertise and support to NPD activities and ensure NPD projects are - manufacturing ready- .

- To own, maintain and develop technical product and material specifications for the business, including effective systems of change management and control.

- To establish and implement procedures for the introduction of alternative or new raw materials to both sites including trial processes.

- To provide technical assistance to Quality in relation to quality issues / investigations as required.

- To identify, justify and initiate opportunities for improvement on the performance and specification of existing products on a cost, quality and/or risk basis.

- To work collaboratively with Production and Quality to ensure maximum technical input is provided to specifications and procedures.

- To maintain an awareness of external technical developments, particularly with regard to new materials and process technologies, and suggest new development possibilities in line with business objectives.

- To support the establishment (with Procurement) a vendor rating system and Site Level Supply Agreements.

- To work collaboratively with procurement to mitigate business risk relating to suppliers including ensuring alternative suppliers are qualified and - shelf ready- for Operations.

- To support innovation and new idea development activities within the business.

- To provide technical expertise to customers as required. This may require international travel.

- To maintain all work areas in a clean, tidy and clearly organised condition and promote good housekeeping / hygiene behaviours to all areas of the business.

- To positively and actively contribute to all meetings where your knowledge or input is required.

- To undergo training and development as appropriate to meet the ongoing needs of the business.

Qualification, Experience & Skill Sets :

1. BE or BSc or MSc in Polymer or Material Science or Equivalent Qualification & having hands on & extensive knowledge and experience of packaging industry (Metal/ Roofing)

2. You will also be in regular contact with polymers, additives, adhesives, solvents & inks.

3. You must demonstrate a hands on- approach and take responsibility for the specification of materials and production methods as and when required. You will have a strong - can do- attitude.

4. You will be technically proficient, decisive and confident with your peers and subordinates and ensure good customer relationships are developed as appropriate.

5. You must be able to demonstrate, or develop, a thorough understanding of all aspects of on-site and ancillary processes.

6. You will have the confidence to positively challenge behaviours and attitudes of peers and subordinates, assisting in the creation of a culture of change, development and continuous improvement.

7. You will be self-reliant, able to make decisions quickly on your own behalf and to distinguish situations where problems should be escalated to senior management.

Knowledge/Experience :

1. It is essential that the candidate can demonstrate hands on experience of applying problem solving techniques and managing the specification of materials used in film extrusion and conversion processes used in flexible packaging.

2. Understanding of materials and product test & characterisation methods, specifically polymer / film testing used in flexible packaging is highly desirable.

3. Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Experience of ERP systems is desirable.
