Job Title : R&D Manager, Solar (Head-R&D)

Role Objective:
The R&D Manager - Solar, will be mandated to develop, maintain and upgrade the range of Solar lighting products and solutions that are technologically advanced, integrally cost competitive, reliable and most appropriate for the Indian market. The incumbent would be spearheading the build- up and maintenance of the world class Solar lighting product development and test evaluation competencies in the Professional Lighting Services BU of Philips India, with an ability to design and develop completely new, localised, improvised and customised solutions that gives a strong competitive edge for the organization.
Role Context:
- Products/services : With a start in 2011, the Professional Lighting Services BU in India is in the process of entering the Indian Solar Lighting market with an objective to become a key player in this emerging segment in 5-7years. This is a key technical role towards the objective. The role is highly focused on realising the huge challenge in keeping abreast with the latest developments in the relevant fields; always looking for breakthroughs to bring the feasible and most optimised solution at a point of time to the market.
- Position in value chain: The Role of the R&D Manager Solar significantly brings along Value add through design and development of better product solutions with lower integral cost and speed to the market consistently to have a cutting edge leadership position and quicker payback in business.
- Other relevant organisational aspects: The dynamics in the Lighting Industry is fast changing with emergence of LED & Solar technology. There is a huge energy deficit in the country and a shift is happening towards Energy saving and Green products powered by non-conventional energy sources. Many non-lighting progressive companies have entered the market and it is of utmost importance for organization to have a strong leadership in the emerging market in order to maintain its leadership position in Lighting Reporting and other significant organisational relationships
Reporting Relationship:
This position reports to the R&D Head of the business group
Team:
The team reporting to the role consists of Hardware and Software Designers, test engineers. The Technical specialist support is shared along with peers
Peers: :
The position works very closely with the Product Marketing and Solar business development team / Sourcing and Supply managers for outsourcing manufacturing; also other R&D managers such as Outdoor and Indoor for system integration in solutions. The position also works closely with the organization Design, PIC on need base.
Key areas of accountability:
- Defines System, Modules, Hardware and Software platform Road Map (2 years) derived out of overall Solar product / solution Roadmap.
- Responsible for Design of Architecture at the sub-system level, function creation that meets application requirement; can be realised, maintainable and extendable.
- Responsible for leading a team of Hardware /Software designers, test engineers to realise the subsystems/modules as per requirement (functional, spec, cost time)
- Co-responsible for source/Supplier selection, development, completely responsible for engineering and process development & approval so as to commercially realise.
- Responsible for Resource Planning and management for the Solar group through Competence gap assessment, budgeting, new recruitment's and, training.
- Networking with other development centers, Global platform team, Institution and approbation bodies, Test laboratories and appropriately adapt/institutionalize/make to use information and leanings.
