Safety Engineer (2-5 yrs)
JOB DETAILS:
Title: Safety Engineer
Department: Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) / Environment, Health & Safety (EHS)
Reports To: HSE Manager or Project Manager
Location: Vadodara, Gujarat, India (with travel to various project sites as needed)
ROLE SUMMARY:
This role is focused on building and maintaining a safe work environment by developing HSE systems, managing risk, training employees, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
HSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS:
- Develop, implement, and maintain the organization's HSE management system (such as ISO 45001).
- Ensure compliance with applicable national and state safety regulations (e.g., Factories Act and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code).
- Establish and update HSE policies, procedures, and safe work practices.
- Perform regular audits and inspections and maintain comprehensive HSE documentation.
HAZARD IDENTIFICATION & RISK ASSESSMENT:
- Conduct thorough Hazard Identification and Risk Assessments (HIRAs) across various operational processes.
- Evaluate potential hazards from machinery, equipment, tools, materials, and procedures.
- Develop and implement risk control measures using a systematic hierarchy (elimination > substitution > engineering controls > administrative controls > PPE).
- Regularly review and update risk assessments to ensure ongoing relevance.
SAFETY TRAINING & AWARENESS:
- Design and deliver safety training programs for employees and contractors.
- Lead regular toolbox talks and safety meetings.
- Promote a proactive safety culture supported by awareness campaigns and proper PPE training.
INCIDENT INVESTIGATION & REPORTING:
- Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses to determine root causes and contributing factors.
- Generate detailed reports with corrective and preventive action recommendations.
- Track and analyze incident data to identify trends and implement improvements.
- Ensure regulatory reporting of all incidents as required.
EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS & RESPONSE:
- Develop, implement, and refine emergency response plans and procedures.
- Coordinate and conduct emergency drills and exercises.
- Oversee availability of first-aid facilities and coordination with external emergency services.
SITE SAFETY MANAGEMENT:
- Supervise safety activities across construction sites or industrial facilities.
- Enforce safety standards among contractors and conduct site audits and inspections.
- Manage site-specific safety personnel and ensure adherence to permit-to-work systems.
LIAISON WITH AUTHORITIES:
- Serve as the point of contact with regulatory agencies, ensuring necessary permits and licenses are in place.
- Represent the organization during safety-related meetings and discussions.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
Essential Qualifications:
- A Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Chemical, etc.) or Science paired with a Diploma in Industrial Safety.
- A mandatory Diploma in Industrial Safety (or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- A minimum of 2 years- experience as a Safety Engineer in a construction or industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of Indian occupational health and safety regulations.
DESIRABLE CERTIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
Certifications like NEBOSH, ASP, or CSP are a plus.
Experience in industry-specific environments (e.g., solar, power, or manufacturing).
Working knowledge of environmental management systems (ISO 14001) and holding First Aid/CPR certifications.
